The 2017 Explorer Guide is HERE!

With CPS out for the summer, the Chicago Pubic Library has officially kicked off the Summer Learning Challenge which means this year’s Explorer’s Guide is officially in (and ready for pick up) at all 80 branch libraries!

This year the CPL team has come up with (what we believe) to be the very best adventures and challenges for our Super Explorers! along with contributions from the cool minds at the Museum of Science and Industry. For those who don’t know, Explorer Guides are available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Polish. For early learners ages 0 – 5 years, there’s the Little Reader’s guide. While school-age kids 6 – 12 years can dive into the Super Explorers guide designed to be leveled up or down depending on children’s ages and learning style. Both guides also encourage parent participation as it improves kids’ educational achievement.

What to look forward to in your Explorer Guide:

  • A summer chock-full of puzzles, design/create activities, science projects, and of course, reading challenges!
  • An invite to Family Day at the Museum of Science and Industry
  • An opportunity (and worksheet) to participate in this year’s exciting e-Reader giveaway!
  • The satisfaction that you are actively combating Evil Doctor Brain Drain, and preparing your child to meet educational milestones during the out of school months.

This year’s Summer Learning Challenge runs from June 19 – September 1. Register at your local branch library and receive an Explorer Guide at registration. You can also follow along on the Library’s calendar of events – to make sure you get as many of the interactive activities, workshops, and performances on your summer calendar!

About the Summer Learning Challenge

Chicago Public Library’s Summer Learning Challenge is made possible thanks to Library Foundation donors and sponsors including the James & Madeleine McMullan Family Foundation, the Allstate Foundation, Boeing, Dr. Scholl Foundation, Helen M. Harrison Foundation, the Paul M. Angell Foundation, KPMG, William Blair, Macy’s Inc, RR Donnelly, PNC Bank, the Walter Heller Foundation, and Cubs Care, a fund of the McCormick Foundation.
The program is created in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry, the Chicago Parks District and Chicago Public Schools. We are proud to share that the program has become a national model and “best practice” in how libraries can engage students over the summer months to proactively fight against what experts call “Summer Slide.”
To join in the fun and activate your superhero – visit your local library to pick up an Explorer Guide today!
The Summer Learning Challenge is free and made possible by individual donors and corporate sponsors like you!  To join in their support of this phenomenal program – we invite you to donate here.
We extend a special thank you to everyone who makes this super program a reality. You are true super heroes!
