Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers below to some of the most common questions about how we work, what we fund, and how you can get involved in building a stronger, more connected Chicago.

Questions about the
Library Foundation
How is the Library Foundation different from the Library?
The Library Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to raise private funds for Chicago Public Library. While we work in close partnership with the Library, we are governed by our own Board of Directors.
Why does the Library need a Foundation? Aren’t libraries publicly funded?
The City of Chicago’s funding covers the Library’s basic operations—buildings, core collections, and staff. The Foundation raises private funds for programs and resources not covered by tax dollars. These programs include early learning and literacy support for children and families, teen creative spaces, digital literacy programs for adults and community learning opportunities.
Where does the Library Foundation’s funding come from?
Our funding comes from a wide range of generous donors—individuals, foundations, and corporations—who believe in the power of public libraries to transform lives.
How does the Library Foundation decide what programs to fund?
We work closely with the Library to identify high-impact programs that align with our three investment priorities: activating creativity and connection, bridging the digital divide, and closing the academic opportunity gap. We focus on programs that serve high-priority communities and address gaps in resource access.
What is the impact of the programs that the Library Foundation funds?
Several of the programs we invest in are national models, including YOUmedia teen spaces and our Teacher in the Library homework help program. But it really depends on the participant—donor-funded programs might help a child learning to read, a job seeker creating their first resume, or a senior learning to video chat with grandchildren. We work closely with our Chicago Public Library partners as well as external research organizations to measure impact and outcomes of our programs. You can read our latest impact report here.

How do I leave the Library Foundation in my will or estate plans?
You can include the Chicago Public Library Foundation in your will, trust, or retirement plan. We’re happy to work with you or your advisor to provide sample language and answer any questions. Learn more about Planned Giving here or contact Audrey Peiper at apeiper@cplfoundation.org; 312-374-5246.
